VHS Wedding Videos on Lake Como: Why Couples Want the Camcorder Look

A VHS wedding video is footage shot on an old camcorder: soft, grainy, warm, a little shaky, with the slightly hissy sound of a built-in microphone. Couples ask for it because it looks like a memory rather than a production, and on Lake Como it works best for the loose parts of the day, like the aperitivo, the speeches and the dance floor. It is a layer on top of your other coverage, and that is how I would plan it.

Why couples want the camcorder look

Most of us grew up with a family camcorder somewhere in the house. Birthdays, holidays, a cousin's wedding filmed by an uncle who never turned it off. That footage was never beautiful, and that is exactly why it feels honest when you watch it now.

Two studios that offer VHS put the appeal in similar words. Thirty Five Studios writes that it "looks like how you remember things, not how they actually were," and describes VHS as something that feels found rather than made (their article). Antonio Pileggi says couples choose it so their wedding feels "like a memory" rather than a recap (his VHS page). Neither page gives numbers on how many couples book it, so I won't either. In my view it makes the most sense for couples who already have a photographer and a film team and want something rougher next to them.

There is also a practical side. A wedding on Lake Como gets photographed and filmed very well. Villas, boats, gardens, golden light on the water. After a while all that polish can blur together. A few seconds of grainy camcorder footage of your friends shouting during a toast cuts through it.

What real VHS footage looks and sounds like

If you have only seen VHS filters on an app, the real thing is different. Thirty Five Studios lists the grain, color drift, scan line artifacts and slight audio hiss as part of the medium itself, not something added afterward. In plain terms:

  • The image is soft. Faces are recognizable, but you won't count eyelashes.
  • Colors bleed and drift, especially reds and strong highlights like sunlight on the lake.
  • Movement looks smeary, and the camera shakes because it is handheld and light.
  • The frame is closer to square than to a modern widescreen or phone screen. Our VHS Reel is delivered in 4:3, like a tape.
  • The sound comes from the camera's own microphone, so you hear the room: laughter, glasses, someone very close to the camera talking over the speech.

That last point matters more than people expect. A cinematic film usually has clean sound from dedicated microphones. Camcorder audio is messy, and the mess is part of why it feels like you were there.

VHS is not good at everything. Fine detail is gone, and it will never give you the wide, sharp shot of the villa from the water. That is the film team's job. Dark parties are less of a problem than you might think: the camera has its own light, which keeps faces visible.

The best moments for VHS at a Lake Como wedding

I treat the VHS camera as the thing I pick up when the formal part is over and people stop posing. Thirty Five Studios says much the same: it suits the moments between the moments, candid guests and the activity around the main events.

Aperitivo

This is where VHS feels most at home. Guests have a drink in hand, the ceremony nerves are gone, and an old camcorder tends to read as a toy rather than a professional camera, so people are less guarded in front of it.

Speeches

The phone and the film team cover the speaker properly. With the VHS camera I look for the table reactions: the parents, the friend who knows what's coming, the laugh that starts before the punchline.

After-party

Dance floor lights, the last hour of the night. Camcorder footage was made for this. The blur and the bright spots of light suit a crowded dance floor far better than they suit a ceremony.

Guests

It is also worth walking around and letting guests talk straight to the camera. A short message to the couple on a camcorder looks and sounds like a home video from years ago, which is the point.

How VHS sits next to phone content and a wedding film

At a full wedding you might have three kinds of video, and each one does a different job.

  1. The wedding film tells the story of the day properly, with planned shots, good light and clean sound. It is the one you will watch in ten years. If you can only book one of these three, book the film. A content creator does not replace it.
  2. The phone content is vertical and fast. Some clips reach you during the wedding itself, and the edited Reels and Highlight Reel arrive within 48 or 72 hours depending on the package, so you and your guests have something to post right away.
  3. The VHS footage is the texture. Thirty Five Studios describes VHS making up roughly 15 to 30 percent of their final edits when they mix it with digital, so even studios that love the format use it as a layer rather than the whole story.

I work alongside photo and film teams and stay out of their frames. Often that team is YASIROV Films, the studio I co-founded, but the same applies to any crew. A small camcorder is easy to keep out of a photographer's way, which makes it simple to add.

If you want to understand the phone side in more detail, I wrote about it in what a wedding content creator actually does.

What's in our Hybrid package

VHS is only available in one package, Hybrid, at €2,000 before tax. It includes:

  • A content creator with a VHS camera and a phone, for up to 10 hours
  • 3 Reels and 1 Highlight Reel up to 1 minute, from the phone footage
  • A VHS Reel up to 30 seconds, delivered in 4:3
  • The RAW materials, so you keep all the unedited footage
  • Edited delivery within 72 hours

Travel and accommodation are included for Lake Como weddings. For Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda we add a fixed €500 for travel and accommodation, plus tax. Other places are quoted separately.

The RAW footage is worth thinking about. The VHS Reel is short on purpose, but the unedited footage gives you everything else: the full guest messages and the dance floor clips that did not make the cut. Everything comes through a download link, and we keep a copy for up to 1 month, so save your files as soon as they arrive. You can see all three packages side by side on the pricing section.

Is VHS right for your wedding?

It suits couples who already care about the polished coverage and want something looser next to it. It suits big, sociable weddings where the guests are half the story. It also suits couples who simply like how old home video looks.

It is less useful if your day is very small and mostly formal, or if what you really want is more phone content delivered quickly. Then Basic or Extended may be the better fit. If you are not sure, write to us with your date and venue and we will tell you honestly what we would choose.

FAQ

Is the VHS footage shot on a real camcorder or with a filter?

On the Hybrid package I film with a VHS camera, not a phone filter. The grain, color drift and sound come from the camera itself.

Can I get only VHS footage without the phone content?

No. VHS is only available in the Hybrid package, which combines the VHS camera with phone content. If you have questions about it, ask us on WhatsApp at +39 339 355 0171.

How long is the VHS Reel?

Up to 30 seconds, delivered in 4:3 like a tape. You also receive the RAW materials, so all the unedited VHS footage is yours.

When will I receive the VHS footage?

Edited delivery on the Hybrid package is within 72 hours of the wedding.

Will a VHS camera get in the way of my photographer or videographer?

No. I work alongside photo and film teams and stay out of their frames. A camcorder is small and easy to move around quietly.

Does VHS replace a wedding film?

No. It works as a layer next to a proper film and your phone content. If your budget only covers one, book the film. You can email us at comocontentcreator@gmail.com to talk it through.
